Dragon Recycling | Dragan Recycling Program Goes to Minhang
During the autumn of 2018, Shanghai Roots & Shoots, together with Hong Mei Xin Yuan Community in Minhang District, continued its Dragon Recycling program as platform for community residents to know how to deal with our wastes at home.
On the Green Classroom of October 13 2018, the volunteers taught the residents the correct way of garbage classification, i.e., kitchen waste, recyclable waste, toxic and polluting waste and other waste. Different types of garbage were respectively sent to different landfills by specialized transporting cars where they will be filled, burnt or biochemically disposed. Apart from that, the volunteers shared other ways to deal with the wastes like a second-hand fair or a recycling program. The volunteers also brought their own recycled bags (made of recycled back-drops or even concrete and plastic bottles) to introduce the idea of changing wastes into resources.
On October 21 2018, SRS volunteers came to the community and launched the Recycling Day where abandoned electronic and electric appliance, unwanted garments, expired drugs, toothpaste tubes and toothbrushes were collected and recycled. According to the garbage classification manual in 2018 issued by the municipal government on, it is imperative to classifying garbage from its sorts. Therefore, the Dragon Recycling made a how-to flyer on garbage classification in order to introduce a more proper way of waste recycling. The flyers were also distributed to the residents living in the community.
The residents at the community took an active part in the recycling day and in total 13.39 kilograms of e-waste, 346 items of garments, and 39 items of toothpaste tubes and toothbrushes were recycled and sent to relevant environmental protection-organizations, 12.71 kilograms of the expired drugs to the nearby pharmacy.
Shanghai Roots & Shoots shoulders its responsibility as an environmental protection-oriented organization, and calls on the young people to build a greener community and a greener homeland.
